Soon…

Outdoor Bowling

I am sure that you are all very much aware of the ongoing COVID situation in BC and especially in our area. At this time, to say the least, it is not good.

However, the news regarding bowling is not all bad. At the moment Bowls BC is in discussion with Via Sport and the PHO to decide upon whether we can restart bowling. The interpretation of the restrictions on some sports, including lawn bowling, is not clear.

Until this is rectified the start of outdoor bowling has to be postponed, hopefully not for long.

Club News

Your green is very near to being ready to play as soon as we possibly can. A format for bowling within the guidelines is in place and ready to go. We now need the help of our patient and generous members to come forwards and rejoin the Club. Funds from membership dues are still required to maintain the club. Without your help this will not be possible.

Next Saturday and Sunday, the 24th and 25th April, between 10:00am and 2:00pm our membership crew will be setting up, within the Covid Protocols, at the Club to accept this year’s membership fees.

Please be assured that bowling will resume as soon as possible.

YOUR SUPPORT AS MEMBERS WILL BE MUCH APPRECIATED DURING THESE TRYING TIMES

Outdoor Season Planning – 2021

Whilst still governed by the Provincial restrictions we will still be allowed to continue bowling as of Phase 2 last year. To recap we are allowed to only Practice: Singles, Pairs, or Cutthroat on 4 alternate rinks with a revised physical distancing of 3 metres (10 feet). There will still be a need for a supervisor for each session. Although Triples are now allowed it has been decided initially to remain with Singles, Pairs or Cutthroat, mainly due to the extended physical distancing.

The intention is to try to make the session format more interesting for the bowlers. We will start with bowling three days per week, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. There will be two daily sessions, 10:00 am to 11:30 am and 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm. The morning session will be Open Pairs and the afternoon session an Open Draw. (Description below).

1.    Each session will be one 10 end game.

2.    Limit of 16 bowlers per session.

3.    Session booking on the club website: qblbc.ca.

OPEN PAIRS – The choice to bowl with a partner of your choice or, if a single player, adjustments will be made by the session supervisor. Cutthroat can also be utilised.

OPEN DRAW – Similar to the pre Covid afternoon tagged draw. All bowlers attending the session will draw a position and rink.

We will also be organising small monthly weekend Special Practice Pairs and possibly a Cutthroat Practice league. This, of course, will depend on the level of interest. You can send your comments to the Games Committee at games@qblbc.ca

Our Guidelines have been revised and accepted by Bowls BC.

A new Waiver and Medical Questionnaire must be completed prior to each bowler’s first session. The required forms can be accessed on the club website or completed at the club at the first session.

Further details before the start day.

Covid-19 Update

COVID 19 AND LAWN BOWLING UPDATE

On Dec. 20th 2020 the Health Authorities issued a directive banning indoor sports including lawn bowling

Since then, a new directive on Jan 8th 2021 has been issued which addresses new protocols that would allow a limited version of indoor bowling with additional restrictions and limited to two players. The board has decided that this is not practical and with infections showing no sign of declining voted to remain closed until there is a major improvement in conditions.

On a happier note, Mick tells me that with Charles and George, they continue to work on the green and no doubt it will be in great shape for the start of outdoor bowling in May. We are assuming we will have a regular season of outdoor bowling and the start of indoor bowling in its normal format in October 2021. What format the outdoor bowling will take is not yet clear.

As you know, membership was carried over from April 2019 to April 2021, but for the 2021/22 season members will need to pay their annual fees in order for the club to continue to function. More information on this later.

Hope we all get our vaccinations in a timely manner and move ahead with our lives although the wearing of masks, etc. will probably continue for some time.

Stay safe,

Ken Davies

President

A New Year – And Still Waiting

Remember, a little while ago, when we could go to a coffee shop and have a good chin-wag?

Well, it’s been some time.

“Real soon now” we may be able to do that again. And maybe do some lawn bowling. Anybody remember how?

No news yet. Some of the members will shortly be told they can receive their poke. The rest of us will wait until the following month. Real soon now. (Maybe this summer?)

Stay perky!
