The Computer Guys – Spring into Summer Tournament

On a blustery May 06th, 36 bowlers came to play in The Computer Guys sponsored ‘Spring into Summer Tournament’. Each team played 1 game indoors and 1 game outdoors.  This is truly challenging as each surface is totally different. But they battled and winners emerged, cold and hungry but winners they were. Geri and her faithful kitchen goblins ran out of soup and sandwiches which is a testament to the food!

Thanks to Stuart and the games committee who made it a great success.

Master Gardener Visit

Our Monday morning gardening crew was fortunate to have a visit from a master gardener the other week. Ida Kespe, who is becoming a master gardener had invited this master gardener to come have a look at our gardens. There we some other interns (future master gardeners) that were also present.

They made the rounds around the grounds and discussed our plants and trees. The master gardener said that our garden crew were doing a good job, which is great praise for our  small group of volunteers.

Way to go group!

McPherson Mixed Triples

On the weekend of May 9th and 10th, Qualicum Beach Lawn Bowling Club hosted the McPherson Triples. The weather was good (no rain) and the greens were running around 11.5, not bad for the beginning of the outdoor season.

There was one unusual occurrence, the team skipped by Kate Wilson scored a 9 point end against the team skipped by Tony Morris.

Geri and her kitchen crew served up two days of delicious lunches and plenty of goodies.

Thank you to Darlene Opacic and the games committee for organizing the tournament.

Winners were as follows.

1st place: Eric Ewen, Luci Ewen, Suzanne Ewen

2nd place: Mary Card, Laurel Witzer, Kent Card

3rd place: Vern Hagstrom, Zoltan Pataky, Linda Cooper

4th place: Vern Greenhill, Herni Saucier, April Gilchrist

5th place: Bob Alleby, Bob Merrell, Joey Merrell

And the 9 ender: Team Kate Wilson

Prizes were presented by QBLBC President Lynn Chwartacki.

And we’re off!!

Another outdoor season kicked off on Friday May 1st. Our President Lynn Chwartacki invited Qualicum Beach’s Mayor, Teunis Westbroek followed by 3 councellors to throw out the first official bowls of the 2026 outdoor season.

There was a good turnout, with tags in at 1pm and the at 1:30pm the first ten end game of the season.

After there were snacks and goodies for all, plus the bar was open for those who wanted to wet their whistle.

Thanks to the volunteers who set up the green mats, playing mats and scoreboards. And thanks to the kitchen crew who set out the snacks and goodies for all to enjoy!

With the opening day behind us, the next challenge is on May 6th with the Club’s ‘Spring into Summer’ tournament sponsored by The Computer Guys followed by the McPherson Mixed Triples on May 9th and 10th.

HAPPY BOWLING EVERYONE. Let’s have a great summer.

Solar Installation

As you may have noticed, the solar installation is well underway. The install crew from Hakai Energy Solutions has all 40 panels on the roof. There are 18 south facing that you can see from the front of the building, and 22 west facing panels on the back part of the roof that you can see when you exit the locker room directly to the greens. The crew has now been working on tying all the wiring into our existing breaker panels, installing the transfer switch and installing the batteries on the east side of the indoor green, outside. We hope to have the work finished by the end of April, and with all this glorious sunshine we should be putting some of the generated electricity back into the power grid.

Sand back in the box

It took a while, but the sandbox is done and on Monday April 13th, the crew moved the sand back into the box. We even had a little help from a former member of the Club. Joe Randazzo, now a member of the Courtenay Lawn Bowling Club, dropped by for a visit with the Monday morning crew. Watching the rest of the group haul wheel barrow after wheel barrow of sand to the new box, Joe offered to move a few loads of the sand for us. What a guy, and greatly appreciated.

Pictured is the sand moving crew of: Graham Rae, Charles MacIntyre, Joe Randazzo, Alan Barry and Ross Nakagawa.

A BIG thank you to ALL that helped with the demolition of the old sand box and construction of the new one.

Sandbox Done!

Well, it’s been a lot of work, especially for Mick Banks, but the new sandbox has fianlly been finished.  Now all we need to do is get the sand pile back into the sandbox. We hope to get some of it back into the box on Monday after our usual morning work bee. It’s a labour intensive job, no 20tth centure technology here! (Shovels and wheel barrows only.)

The old rotten wood and other items will be going to the dump on Sunday the 12th thanks to Merle and her truck. It will be nice to have that corner of the green clear and ready for the outdoor season on May 1st.

Garage Sale Success!

Well that was certainly an exciting day! They were lined up in the parking lot by 8:30am anticipating the 9:00am opening. There were so many people early on that some people left and said they’d come back when they could move around freely.

A HUGE thank you to all the volunteers who helped pick up donations, sorted, priced, tested, washed, polished and then manned the tables for the sale. Also thank you to Nita and Jane who put a lot of items on Facebook Market Place. Some of the bigger items that are left will continue to be posted on the Market Place.

Thanks also to the kitchen, (Katherine, Merle and Phil) for the hot dogs and goodies.

A special thanks to Geri, Queen of the Garage Sale for all the hard work she does to pull this off. Rumour has it we brought in about $5300!! I think that’s one of the best sales ever!

March 22nd Sunday Fun Day Tournament

Sunday March 22nd was the scene of the 3rd Triples Sunday Fun Day Tournament. There we three separate draws with the first game starting at 8:30am and the last game starting at 4:00pm. Prizes for first and second  places were handed out after the second game of each draw.

All draws were full which allowed 54 members to take part. There were some close games and others not so close. You never know what’s going to happen on any given day or any given game. The fortunes of teams can even change throughout a game.

Thanks to James MacDonald and Darlene and George Opacic for organizing the tournament and making sure it ran without any hitches. It’s greatly appreciated by the members.

As usual the kitchen served up a delicious beef stroganoff with salad and sticky toffee pudding for dessert. There were the usual coffee and goodies available all day for a nominal $5. Thanks to Geri, Katherine and Merle for keeping the members fed and watered.

Jodi, Mike and Garry looked after the bar throughout the day.
