Coring

Coring

Each fall we have to “bed down” the Outdoor Green. The first order of business is coring and sanding. Later, a mixture of grass seed and fertilizer is applied along with a certain amount of lime. Then a fungicide mixture is spread before it gets chilly.

Levelling can be done to correct any runs. As the weather gets cold, the established grass along with the new grass spreads their roots into the sanded plug holes. In the spring, the Green is aerated and treated as necessary in preparation for a new season.

Coring is essential. And hard work!

Thank you to everyone who came out: Ross, Harry, Garry, Brock, Willie, James, Graham, Barb, Dawn, Janet, Geri, Lorane, Nita, and others? (Too exhausted to remember!)

So sad to say that our friend, Keith, has passed.

Keith has been on the Board, represented Qualicum admirably in tournaments, and has been an indefatigable volunteer for years.

The Nationals in Regina

Well done, Luci!

See the Bowls Canada report here: https://bowlscanada.com/en/first-championships-of-the-2023-season-wrap-up/

Suzanne’s report from the U25 Nationals follows:

Luci Ewen played a full round robin and qualified for the bronze medal event.  She lost that game to the defending champion (21-17).  Those that placed 1st and 2nd in her division are Team Canada Senior Squad members and had been selected to represent Canada in the World Bowls event in Australia in August.  So competition was high.  Luci did beat Jordan Kos who has been on the Team Canada Senior squad for a number of years and recently competed in the Commonwealth Games so that felt like a win in itself.

BC had 7 players competing and came home with 8 medals. It was great that they all came home with a medal.

The top four from each division (not incl the random pairs event) are placed on the Team Canada Development Squad for 1 year.  All BC representatives qualified.

BC came home with the most medals of any province – sadly for the vast majority of all players it will likely be the last time playing in this event. It’s hard to answer in a single sentence how it went (for me lol) because it is such a long event and so many factors contribute to the overall experience. And it’s not just the final result that reflects that experience in our opinion.
